How to negotiate a bill: a script that works with most providers

Negotiating a bill is not about arguing. It is about being prepared, asking the right team for something specific, and getting the result confirmed. This simple process works for most household bills.

Before you call: prepare three things

  • Your latest bill and account number
  • What changed: a promotion ended, a fee appeared, or the price went up
  • What you want: a specific lower price, a removed fee, or a better plan

The script

  1. “Hi, I’m calling about my account. My bill went up from $X to $Y and I’d like to talk about options to bring it down.”
  2. “I’ve been a customer for a while and I’d like to stay, but the current price doesn’t work for me.”
  3. “Is there a loyalty or retention offer available on my account?”
  4. If they offer something: “Thanks. Can you confirm the new monthly price, how long it lasts, and that nothing else on my plan changes?”
  5. If they don’t: “I understand. Could you note my request, or is there someone on the retention team I can speak with?”

Get it in writing

Ask for a confirmation or reference number and an email confirming the new price and how long it lasts. Check your next bill to make sure the change actually applied.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Agreeing to a new contract or plan change without hearing the full terms
  • Accepting a discount without asking when it ends
  • Sharing passwords or full card numbers with anyone who calls you

Rather not make the call?

Saveila can make the request for you as your authorized representative, only for the exact action you approve, and shows you the provider’s confirmation number when the saving is confirmed.

Questions

Which bills can be negotiated?
Internet, TV, phone and insurance are the most common. Some fees, such as equipment rental or late fees, can also be removed or waived on request.
Can someone negotiate a bill on my behalf?
Yes, when you authorize it. Saveila identifies itself truthfully as acting for you and only makes the specific request you approved.
